For the Spring class session we welcome new and returning instructors Jane English, Ed Pierce, Andrew Kline, Annie Tiberio Cameron and Bill Steinhurst teaching a variety of offerings for beginners to more experienced photographers working with film or digital cameras.

You do not need to be a CPS member to sign up for classes, although you will be eligible for a discounted price on classes and free darkroom access if you join. A membership category for class session members allows you to become a darkroom member, entitled to free use of the darkroom during Community Darkroom Hours, for the duration of the session during which you are registered for a course.

Discovering the Silver Print with Ed Pierce
Discover the magic of creating your own black and white prints in this workshop for beginners. Demonstrations of basic printing techniques will be followed by guided printing sessions. Emphasis will be on the basic skills and knowledge you need to consistently create good prints.

Experience required: none
Date:  Friday, May 9, 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Required Materials: Students are encouraged to use their own b&w negatives; I can provide if needed.

Basic Digital Camera Concepts with Annie Tiberio Cameron
Are you making a shift to digital photography from film, or starting fresh in digital? How do digital cameras capture your image? Learn the basic features that make digital cameras tick. If you want to understand terms that are new and confusing, such as resolution, memory cards, optical & digital viewfinders, file formats, white balance, and more, come and learn the basics in simple language, supported with a comprehensive handout.  Some features will be familiar from your film camera, and we will briefly review how these features appear on your digital cameras.

Experience required: Suitable for beginners to digital photography, either point-and-shoot or SLR cameras.
Required materials: Bring your camera and the instruction manual that came with your camera!  If you don’t have one, please download one from the web or secure one from the manufacturer before the class.

Portraits with Andrew Kline
An introduction to and survey of the complex field of portraiture. Using our fellow classmates as subjects, we will explore the techniques and philosophy of making images of ourselves and others. Using studio and natural lighting, we will explore this endlessly fascinating area of photography. We will work towards developing personal style in this complex and rewarding field. Outside of class assignments will be shared in group critiques. For film or digital cameras.

Date: Wednesdays, May 7, and May 14 and 21, 6:00 to 8:30 p.m.
Location: Afterimage Photography, 26 State Street, 2d Floor, Montpelier
Cost: $85 member/$95 non-member plus $10 materials fee payable to the instructor at the beginning of class.


Exposure – The Basis for all Photography with Annie Tiberio Cameron
Whether shooting with a film or digital SLR camera this basic class is designed to explain exposure, the basis for all photography. Concepts covered include shutter speed, f-stops, ISO speed, metering modes, use of natural light, and more. This 3-session class features an evening lecture session, a field trip, and finishes with an evening session to review your work from the field trip. 

Required experience: Suitable for beginners or those desiring a solid review. 
Required materials:  SLR camera and its instruction booklet (SLR= cameras that can change lenses).  The information in this class does not focus on point-and-shoots.
Dates: Thursday, May 1, 6:30 – 9:30 p.m.; Saturday, May 3, 8-11 a.m. (rain date:  Sunday May 4); Thursday, May 8, 6:30 – 9:30 p.m.

Behind the Camera with Jane English

Through a progression of interesting and fun exercises we will become more aware of what goes on in a photographer's most important piece of equipment -- his or her own awareness. Interspersed with the exercises will be discussion and Powerpoint presentations.

Photographing the Stream with Ed Pierce

Spring in Vermont is a time when copious amounts of water run down the hills as the snow melts, creating infinite yet temporary opportunities for photographing moving water. Spend the morning listening to the constant swish and looking for images. Ed will take you to one or two of his favorite local streams, demonstrate the use of a large format camera and provide helpful tips.

All experience levels welcome

Required Materials: Camera (any type), Digital users should bring instruction book; sturdy shoes/ water bottle/ insect repellant; tripod is recommended (instructor can provide two).

Introduction to Digital Workflow for Photographers with Bill Steinhurst
So, you’ve filled up the card in your digital camera or, worse yet, your computer’s hard drive. Now what? When you are drowning in image files, a logical but flexible workflow is your lifeline. Learn when, why and how to import, store, backup, sort, rate, keyword, access, and output your images. This course does not deal with processing (“Photoshopping”) your images, but will show you the most important corrections you will want to apply, when in the workflow to apply them, and why. We will look at the latest in software, including Photoshop CS, Photoshop Elements, Lightroom, and Aperture.

Experience required: Digital photography beginners are welcome, but familiarity with camera and personal computer basics is required.
Required Materials and Equipment: None. Students are welcome to bring a laptop to try out techniques as we go along, but charge your batteries, as outlets may be limited.

TEACHER BIOS

Annie Tiberio Cameron is a nationally known nature photographer whose work has appeared in galleries and art shows across the United States. Since 1978, Annie has taught photography for many institutions, primarily for University of Massachusetts Continuing Education. Since 1991, Annie has undertaken annual solo wilderness photography treks, and now tours the country with a retrospective slide show entitled, “Death Valley, Okefinokee and Beyond.” Since the late ‘80s she has also taught photography for the National Wildlife Federation in locales from Hawaii to the Bay of Fundy, and many places in between. Jane English
began photographing while completing a Ph.D. in physics at the University of Wisconsin, ultimately pursuing a career in photography. Her black and white photographs of nature illustrate six books, including a best-selling translation of the Chinese classic Tao Te Ching, published in 1972 by Random House. Jane founded Earth Heart in 1985. After living in Mount Shasta, California for 15 years, Jane moved back to her native New England in 2002. Most of Jane's recent books and calendars have been published by Amber Lotus, giving her time to focus on creative work rather than on business matters.

Andrew Kline has been a professional photographer for 30 years, working from his studio and gallery, Afterimage Photography at 26 State Street in Montpelier. His commercial work encompasses photography for publications, documentation projects, wedding photography, digital presentations, portraits and custom black and white film processing and printing. Recent exhibits include the Helen Day Art Center in Stowe, a retrospective at the Vermont Supreme Court, Enigma Gallery in Essex, Shelburne Craft School Gallery on the Green, the Blinking Light Gallery in Plainfield, ArtPath Gallery in Burlington, and the Rockingham Arts & Museum Project Gallery. Artist-photographer Edward Pierce has 20+ years of experience in photography. He earned a B.A. in Documentary Arts from Antioch College in 1985, and attended the Zone VI Photography Workshop with Fred Picker in 1994. He studied large format technique with John Sexton in Colorado. He has professional experience as a photojournalist, several years in the printing/finishing industry, and has taught courses at the Church Street Center in Burlington. He is an actively working artist, mostly using large format cameras and traditional silver based materials in the American landscape genre. His work may be seen at the Brick House Gallery in Stowe as well as on  his website, www.edpiercephoto.com

William Steinhurst photographs with film and digital, in color and black and white, exploring a wide variety of landscapes and city environments, mainly in the desert Southwest and the Northeastern U.S. He has taught photography courses and workshops for the Center for Photographic Studies, the Community College of Vermont and private clients. He has studied at the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops, holds a Certificate in Photography from the University of Vermont Church Street Center, and has exhibited and curated shows of photography and other visual art media in Central Vermont. He has been awarded two grants for photographic projects by the Montpelier Community Arts Program. Selected work can be seen at www.steinhurst.com.
