FALL 2008 CLASSES

For the Fall class session we are featuring classes by instructors Andrew Kline, Jamie Cope, Annie Tiberio Cameron, Sandra Shenk, Lisa Dimondstein and Bill Steinhurst and Carley Stevens-McLaughlin teaching a variety of offerings for beginners to more experienced photographers working with film or digital cameras.

You do not need to be a CPS member to sign up for classes, although you will be eligible for a discounted price on classes and free darkroom access if you join. A membership category for class session members allows you to become a darkroom member, entitled to free use of the darkroom during Community Darkroom Hours, for the duration of the session during which you are registered for a course.

Creative Movement in Photography with Sandra Shenk and Lisa Dimondstein

This 2 session workshop will explore the creative use of movement using slow speeds, panning, and other forms of camera movement. You will be adding new skills while exploring your creativity. Come join us in a day of fun both indoors and out followed by an evening to review and be astounded by your images. Both digital and film camera users are welcome.

Required experience: suitable for all
Required materials: film or digital camera with capability of shooting at slow speeds (1/15 sec) and slower, a tripod, CD’s of images if using digital capture or slides/prints if using film.
Dates: Saturday, Oct. 18, 10:00 am – 4:00 pm and Thursday, Oct. 30, 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Introduction to Black and White Photography with Carley Stevens-McLaughlin

Enjoy the magic of the darkroom! Learn the foundation of photography from shooting film, developing and printing, to discovering the visual techniques of composition, perspective, perception and more. Advanced students are encouraged to participate as assistants and improve their own technique. The course ends with a public exhibit of student work. This 12-session course is for students in grades 7-12.

Dates: Wednesday and Friday evenings, 6-8 p.m.. Oct. 22 - December 10 (no class Fri. Oct. 31, Wed. Nov. 26 and Fri. Nov. 28 Thanksgiving week)

Introduction to Digital Workflow for Photographers with Bill Steinhurst
So, you’ve filled up the card in your digital camera or, worse yet, your computer’s hard drive. Now what? When you are drowning in image files, a logical but flexible workflow is your lifeline. Learn when, why and how to import, store, backup, sort, rate, keyword, access, and output your images. This course does not deal with processing (“Photoshopping”) your images, but will show you the most important corrections you will want to apply, when in the workflow to apply them, and why. We will look at the latest in software, including Photoshop CS, Photoshop Elements, Lightroom, and Aperture.                                                                                                                           

Experience required: Digital photography beginners are welcome, but familiarity with camera and personal computer basics is required.
Required Materials and Equipment: None. Students are welcome to bring a laptop to try out techniques as we go along, but charge your batteries, as outlets may be limited.
Dates: Thursdays, Oct.16, Oct. 23 and Nov. 6, 6:30 – 9:00 p.m.

The Beauty of Portraiture Lighting with Jamie Cope and Andrew Kline

Beautiful lighting is the key to a beautiful portrait, whether in color or black and white, film or digital.  Andrew Kline will teach the art of studio lighting and how to dramatize a portrait.  Jamie Cope will teach how to control and manipulate the use of natural light indoors or outdoors for soft portraiture light.

Experience required: suitable for all with digital SLR cameras
Required materials: digital cameras only and laptops (if you have one) for editing your work Saturday afternoon.  Bring a bag lunch.

Basic Digital Camera Concepts with Annie Tiberio Cameron

Are you making a shift to digital photography from film, or starting fresh in digital? How do digital cameras capture your image? Learn the basic features that make digital cameras tick. If you want to understand terms that are new and confusing, such as resolution, memory cards, optical & digital viewfinders, file formats, white balance, and more, come and learn the basics in simple language, supported with a comprehensive handout.  Some features will be familiar from your film camera, and we will briefly review how these features appear on your digital cameras.                                 

Experience required: Suitable for beginners to digital photography, either point-and-shoot or SLR cameras.
Required materials: Bring your camera and the instruction manual that came with your camera!  If you don’t have one, please download one from the web or secure one from the manufacturer before the class.
Dates: Saturday, Nov. 8, 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

TEACHER BIOS

Annie Tiberio Cameron is a nationally known nature photographer whose work has appeared in galleries and art shows across the United States. Since 1978, Annie has taught photography for many institutions, primarily for University of Massachusetts Continuing Education. Since 1991, Annie has undertaken annual solo wilderness photography treks, and now tours the country with a retrospective slide show entitled, “Death Valley, Okefinokee and Beyond.” Since the late ‘80s she has also taught photography for the National Wildlife Federation in locales from Hawaii to the Bay of Fundy, and many places in between. Andrew Kline has been a professional photographer for 30 years, working from his studio and gallery, Afterimage Photography at 26 State Street in Montpelier. His commercial work encompasses photography for publications, documentation projects, wedding photography, digital presentations, portraits and custom black and white film processing and printing. Recent exhibits include the Helen Day Art Center in Stowe, a retrospective at the Vermont Supreme Court, Enigma Gallery in Essex, Shelburne Craft School Gallery on the Green, the Blinking Light Gallery in Plainfield, ArtPath Gallery in Burlington, and the Rockingham Arts & Museum Project Gallery. William Steinhurst photographs with film and digital, in color and black and white, exploring a wide variety of landscapes and city environments, mainly in the desert Southwest and the Northeastern U.S. He has taught photography courses and workshops for the Center for Photographic Studies, the Community College of Vermont and private clients. He has studied at the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops, holds a Certificate in Photography from the University of Vermont Church Street Center, and has exhibited and curated shows of photography and other visual art media in Central Vermont. He has been awarded two grants for photographic projects by the Montpelier Community Arts Program. Selected work can be seen at www.steinhurst.com. Sandra Shenk has been intrigued with photography since college, and took it up in earnest when she retired in 2003.  She attended the Rocky Mountain School of Photography in Missoula, MT where she completed a 4-month intensive course of study of both film and digital photography. She has studied with Freeman Patterson focusing on the techniques of montage, multiple exposures, and with Kathleen Carr, an internationally known transfer artist, learning to create Polaroid transfers. “I have always been entranced with the interplay of light and color. My goal is to be able to recreate the mystery of that interplay in my photography and to create images that have an impressionistic, painterly or dreamlike quality to them.” She teaches photography classes through The Center for Photographic Studies, Helen Day Art Center in Stowe and The Firehouse in Burlington. Lisa Dimondstein Following a life long interest in photography Lisa made a commitment in 2003 to pursue this passion on a deeper level. She attended the Rocky Mountain School of Photography, in Montana for a 3 month intensive program. Since that time she has exhibited her photographs in galleries, restaurants and art shows, as well as teaching in Northern Vermont. In 2006 she won the award of excellence in photography at For Art’s Sake in Stowe Vermont. Through her photographs she aspires to capture a sense of place, that may not be literal, but holds the essence of what she is experiencing or seeing and is drawn to a sense of movement and fluidity in images.
