Krista Cheney
Still Life on Ice

Thursday, June 18, 2009
7:00 p.m.
Bethany Church parlor, 115 Main St., Montpelier

Purple bells and sedum in ice
Krista Cheney

            Inspired by the art of nature, Krista Cheney draws upon the unpredictable character of ice to create her frozen still life photographs. Fractures, fissures and air bubbles add a new dimension to the ordinary objects that she encases within blocks of ice. Shooting throughout the thawing process, she captures the changing form of her subject—cracks, clouds, and crystals appear and vanish; rivulets of melt water streak down the sides. Ice distorts and highlights shapes, textures and colors. The result is a photograph that is beautiful and visually stimulating.

            Krista Cheney is a native Vermonter, currently living in St. George, Vermont. She has studied photography since 2003, taking classes and workshops at local venues and the Maine Media Workshops in Rockport, Maine. Krista was a two-time finalist in the Photographer's Forum magazine Annual Spring Photography Contest with her frozen still life images. She has exhibited at Burlington's Art’s Alive Festival of Fine Art, the South End Art Hop and the Round Barn in Waitsfield.

2009 MEMBERSHIP APPEAL
Please join us in supporting CPS by becoming a member or renewing your CPS membership. CPS is dedicated to elevating access to and appreciation for the photographic arts in Central Vermont, and your support helps to underwrite our various projects: educational workshops throughout Central Vermont, monthly third Thursday programs in Montpelier, member exhibits, and youth programming, such as the oral history and portrait project matching Barre teens with Barre elders. Our income is derived from many sources, including grants and tuition, but nearly one quarter of our income is from memberships like yours.

Membership Benefits:
• discounts on classes offered by CPS;
• invitations to enter work in CPS member exhibits;
• one year free enrollment in the preferred customer discount program at Green Mountain Camera in Waterbury Center—a $25.00 value;
• one year free enrollment in the film club at Bob’s Camera in Barre, including 10% of select merchandise and 20% off the price of film and reprints;
• notification of local and regional exhibits and presentations;
• participation in electing the CPS board of directors and officers;
• connection with the many other photographers in our area.

New members will receive a certificate entitling you to 20 free 4x6 prints from your digital camera at Bob’s Camera and a photo-magnet created by photographer Annie Tiberio Cameron.

CPS offers several levels of membership:
• Supporting Individual ($35) and Senior Supporting Members ($20);
• Sponsoring Business member ($50)

Learn about the benefits of each membership level on the membership form. You may print the membership form and join or renew by mail. If you prefer, you may pay the membership fee with a credit card from our website using PayPal, a secure server.

Let us know how we can improve and build on our programs and services. Your suggestions will help us to tailor our programs to the needs of the community and increase our access and visibility. Members are always welcome to attend our monthly board meetings, and if you have interest and time, we also have openings on the board and volunteer opportunities. If you like to contribute without becoming a member, we welcome targeted contributions to a scholarship fund to subsidize class tuition, for example. And—if you know of someone who might be interested in CPS, please pass this along.

With your help we can continue and expand our ability to bring more and varied photographic programs to Central Vermont. We appreciate your support and look forward to a great year featuring exciting class offerings, speakers and programs.  Thanks for your interest in CPS, and we look forward to receiving your renewal soon. Thank you!

Sincerely,

The Center for Photographic Studies Board of Directors
